Savannah Way:
This one’s for the real travellers amongst you, so if you’re landing at Cairns Airport then you should definitely think about this one! Running from Cairns in North Queensland to Broome in Western Australia, it takes in a myriad of of breathtaking national parks and a number of world heritage sights, as well as the world’s longest lava tubes . You’ll pass through ancient indigenous settlements, old gold mining towns and outback cattle ranches as you travel across the country.
Pacific Highway:
For people landing at Sydney International or Brisbane International then the Pacific Coast drive positively is a must. Running along the East Coast between the two cities, it takes in the rugged coastline of the Pacific and the picture perfect ocean views. A well worn route for surfers and all kinds of tourists, it runs alongside numerous beautiful bays, beaches and seaside towns. Another handy thing about this route is that it’s a reasonable length, so you won’t have to pay lots for petrol!
Fraser Island:
This is another four wheeljob, but it’s a great drive, and a must if you are into camping. Head off road to the sandy beaches and tropical rainforests of this unique island. Located just off the coast of Hervey Bay in Queensland, it’s a once in a lifetime off road experience for the explorer behind the wheel. Again fuel is pretty cheap in Queensland so you can save a few bucks here!
The Great Ocean Road:
If you’re touching down at Melbourne Airport then you should definitely check out the Great Ocean Road. Passing the sights of the Victorian coast line in Australia’s temperate southern corner, this amazing scenic drive runs from Torquay to Warrnambool and is the most famous of the lot. Meandering through the thick rainforests of the Otway Ranges, the picturesque Twelve Apostles landmark and the rugged cliffs, isolated coves and world famous surfing beaches along the coast, it definately is a drive to remember… and you don’t even need a special vehicle to do it.
